At this time of year it can be difficult to know what to wear, the weather is getting warmer but it's often not warm enough for sandals or flip flops. But if you are looking for stylish footwear this spring what about a pair of desert boots? Or if that isn't your style there is always a chukka boot.
They can be worn with chinos or with jeans at the weekend and can be dressed up or down and even have a celeb following with the likes of Steve McQueen, Liam Gallagher and even the Beatles wearing them. What's more because the boot is a wardrobe classic it will last way beyond this summer and if you pick the right fabric it will be an all year round look as well.
So just what are desert and chukka boots? The desert boot has been popular since the 1940s but since then it has been reinvented many times. While today's styles don't look like they have been around for six decades. In fact it is safe to say that they have never gone out of fashion. They were originally designed for British solders to wear in Egypt while they were off duty but were made available to the public in 1949 by Clarks.
The distinguishing feature of the boot is its crepe sole which is made of rubber and is incredibly hard wearing.
Chukka, or turf boots as they are also known, are quite similar to the desert boot only they don't have a crepe sole. They are ankle boots which are usually made of suede or calfskin. The name actually comes from the game of polo and the boot traditionally has two or three lace holes.
For a good selection of men's desert boots try Ben Sherman, Ted Baker and Rockport, while Broker and Ikon do a good range of Chelsea boots.
However, if a desert boot isn't your style you could try another classic men's boot, the Chelsea boot. They are easily recognisable with their elasticated sides and, because they are more formal, can be worn with suits in the office. Like the desert boot they are a wardrobe staple that will never go out of fashion and, if you get the right pair, will last for years.
Women and shoes seem to go hand in hand, whereas men and shoes do not really have the same relationship. But the reason for this is that men can be a lot more rational about shoes and in all honesty can get away with just three pairs of shoes.
Obviously this is a total assumption and many men out there will be just as obsessed with shoes as some women, but if you stop and think it through you will find that there are three main types of shoe for a man, meaning they only really need one of each.
The first of the three is the boot. Boots are highly fashionable at the moment and are worn more and more by men. Obviously the ideal time to wear boots is in the autumn and winter. They keep your feet good and warm, whilst protecting the bottom of your trousers from the elements, if you choose to wear them tucked in. If you want to make your ankles extra safe in icy weather you just tighten the laces and fasten them right to the top, then on the other hand you can loosen them and wear them open at the neck to create the desired ‘casual’ boot look.
Secondly you have your trainer / pump shoes. These are commonly worn in the spring and summer, but can be used in the autumn and slightly milder winters. With these shoes men tend to have a choice between the chunky ‘Vans’ style trainer, or the slim-line ‘ Converse’ looking trainer. Both can be found at Joe Browns and will generally suit most men and most occasions.
Finally you have the optimistic flip-flops. Every year at some point the sun will shine its little heart out and your feet will want to break free. This is when the flip-flops come out. Good old-fashioned foam soled flip-flops are ideal for these occasions and make you ‘flip-flop’ with ease. So there we have it, three types of shoes that cover most shoe situations. You men really do have it easy sometimes!
